On June 7, 2018, people in Ontario will go to the polls to elect the new provincial government. As the voice of community-governed primary health care, AOHC is asking each party to support our vision of the best possible health and wellbeing for everyone in Ontario with three main recommendations:
1. Commit to comprehensive primary health care as the foundation of the health system
Ensure that health promotion, illness prevention and community wellbeing are at the centre of our health system, and expand access to community-governed primary health care models.
2. Support AOHC members’ ability to grow our role leading community-based, comprehensive primary health care
Population needs-based planning leads to our doors – we need support to keep them open with an increase to base funding and support for expansion.
3. Build a healthier and more inclusive society in Ontario
It’s time to broaden our definitions of health and provide the conditions for healthy living by: expanding drug and dental coverage, ending the three month wait for OHIP, and implementing strategies to address systemic racism. Government needs to tackle poverty as the biggest barrier to good health by raising minimum wage and social assistance rates, and investing in affordable housing and childcare.
